The Claudia Ann Seaman Awards for Young Writers

Deadline Extended Awards Acknowledge Excellence in Teen Writing

The Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley is pleased to announce the extended deadline of May 30, 2013, for young writers (grades 9-12) to submit their work for the 2013 Claudia Ann Seaman Awards for Young Writers and the CAS Hudson Valley Poetry Award. This year will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the awards.

Works may be submitted on-line to Polyphony H.S. until May 30, 2013 at www.polyphonyhs.com. The site includes detailed submission guidelines and information. Award submissions undergo a comprehensive peer-led editorial process with the goal of supporting the development of the young, creative voice by providing careful, compassionate attention to their work.

In 1983, the Seaman family established the award in memory of their daughter and sister, a young poet, with the support of the Community Foundation of Dutchess County. The CAS awards partners in this exciting endeavor with Chicago-based Polyphony H.S., a student-run, international literary magazine for high school writers and editors.

Through the years the Seaman Award expanded into The Claudia Ann Seaman Award for Young Writers, accepting nationwide submissions and granting awards for the best poem, short story and personal essay. An annual competition for the CAS Hudson Valley Poetry Award is also open to all students in grades 9-12 in Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam, and Orange counties. These submissions are also considered for the national poetry award. We encourage all area high school students to submit their works in their chosen literary form for the 2013 awards. Teachers are also encouraged to share this opportunity with their students.
