The John T. Sloper Community Fund Grants Committee reviewed 13 grant requests totaling $70,594 for the fall 2009 cycle. Established and endowed with the proceeds from the sale of the Sloper-Willen Community Ambulance Service, founded in 1958 by John T. Sloper, the John T. Sloper Fund awards grants in Southern Dutchess and Putnam counties for EMT training and emergency medical equipment. Seven grants totaling $22,275 were awarded.
Fall 2009 Grant Awards
Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Inc. $4,500
To purchase a Masimo Rad-57 Carbon Monoxide Oximiter to measure the Carbon Monoxide level in the human bloodstream.
Critical Response Network $5,000
Presentation of Emergency Services Management Development Series seminars for the volunteer emergency services in Dutchess and Putnam County designed to train the volunteer administrative managers of volunteer emergency services organizations.
Dutchess County Sheriff's Office $2,500
To purchase two foldable Medivac floatation litters for patrol boats for lifting and transporting patients during medical emergencies while on the Hudson River and Whaley Lake.
The Hastings Center $1,250
To purchase an AED package.
Hudson River Housing, Inc. $1,250
With an additional $1,250 from the Cardiovascular Fund, funds will be used to purchase a new AED package for the Hillcrest House Transitional Living Facility as well as certification training for new staff.
Pawling Fire Department $4,775
Senior Safety Initiative for seniors and disabled residents of any age. Public education and in-home visits on fall prevention; fire, burn and scald prevention; and installation of free smoke and/or carbon monoxide detectors for low income residents.
SUNY Dutchess Community College $3,000
To purchase Human Patient Simulators (Advanced Manikins) to be utilized in the various courses and programs offered by the EMS Program.
The Cardiovascular Fund supports research, education, and community programs in Dutchess County related to cardiovascular disease or stroke. Two grants totaling $3,004 were awarded this fall.

To purchase one AED, as well as batteries and necessary accessories for a second AED that the organization is utilizing.
