The Community Response Grants Committee reviewed fifty-six grant requests totaling $147,832. The current focus of these grants is to build the capacity of organizations and the community by providing funding for projects that improve the effectiveness and efficiency of nonprofits. Eleven grants totaling $25,000 were awarded this fall.
Fall 2009 Grant Awards
Astor Services for Children & Families $2,500
Support for a “Mobile Library” that will be used by Astor’s Early Head Start and Head Start families who are in home based programs in an effort to bring literacy materials to them to further expose the children and their families to the array of books, cultural music, DVDs (parent information), and other media that are available.
Dutchess Outreach $3,000
Support for food and other purchases for the Dutchess Outreach Food Pantry.
Grace Smith House, Inc. $1,941
Funds will be used to purchase a computer, two printers and software to strengthen Grace Smith House’s ability to serve victims of domestic violence by increasing the agency’s efficiency.
Harriet Tubman Academic Skills Center $3,000
Funds to be used in the Afterschool Connections program to hire a teacher and start a 6th grade drop in program for former students to work on their homework, as well as receive any additional help they may need.
Hudson River Housing, Inc. $2,500
Funds will be used to replace worn mattresses with new, durable and washable ones to be used at Hillcrest House.
Mid-Hudson Addiction Recovery Centers $2,015
Funds to purchase a telephone system that will allow more effective communication for MARC's Bolger House community residence.
Mill Street Loft, Inc. $3,000
Funds will be used to underwrite the costs of purchasing a license and digital camera necessary to implement an InDesign Digital Art Program. Area students will be afforded an opportunity to learn new technologies that will prepare them for studies in architecture, graphic design, special effects, visual reality and spatial imaging. Workforce professionals will be able to expand and improve their skills in marketing, advertising and other fields.
No Strings Attached Food Pantry $2,699
Purchase of a new, self contained commercial refrigeration system to be used exclusively for the food pantry.
Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley $2,000
Support for upgrading existing computers and purchasing new computers in preparation for a new practice management system, which is the pre-cursor to electronic medical records, now required to be in operation by 2015 in order to receive federal reimbursements for care provided.
Somos La Llave del Futuro $1,000
Funds to support the Immigrant Health Initiative, which seeks to collect current data on the health status of the recent immigrant population from both rural and urban settings in Dutchess County. The research will provide useful insight into barriers impacting preventive, primary and specialty care access on a personal level, as well as institutional and system-wide in Dutchess County.
The REAL Skills Network Inc. $1,345
Support for the expansion and development of Alternative to Violence Project trainings to include middle school students. The Alternative to Violence Project has been dedicated to empowering people to lead nonviolent lives through affirmation, respect for all, community building, cooperation and trust since it was founded in 1975.
